   【二十六】  
   古今之成大事业、大学问者，必经过三种之境界： 
“昨夜西风凋碧树。独上高楼，望尽天涯路。”
 此第一境也。 
“衣带渐宽终不悔，为伊消得人憔悴。”
 此第二境也。
“众 里寻他千百度，回头蓦见(当作‘蓦然回首’)，
  那人正(当作‘却’)在，灯火阑珊处。”
  此第三境也。 
  此等语皆非大词人不能道。
 然遽以此意解释诸词，
 恐为晏、欧诸 公所不许也。【2】  
  
Those great minds or bloomers in all ages definitely experienced through three states:"The west wind withered verdurous trees yestreen; I ascended a height alone and saw the end of the earth." which means the first state. "Never regretted for the gradually loosing of the belt that one became peak and pine for the other." which means the second. "Seek the one among the crowd millions of times when turning aroundthat the right was in the place of waning lights." the third. These verses were only uttered by excellent masters while I applied those to explain pomes, which may be impermissible by Yan Shu and Ouyang Xiu et al sirs.【3】
